About the Basic STI kit

How this test works

This is either a urine test or it is a straightforward swab test. After collecting your sample, you return it in the pre-paid box to our in-house lab. You will receive your results within 2-3 days of your sample reaching our lab.

Why choose this STI test?

If you're sexually active, then regular STI testing is one of the best things you can do to look after your health and that of your partner(s). Many people with an STI don't have any symptoms and so it's possible to have an STI without knowing.

Our home STI tests are easy to do at a time and place that suits you. But if you have any symptoms, or a partner has tested positive for one or more STIs then you should get tested at a sexual health service as soon as you can.

When to take this test

Take the test at the right time

The only way to know if you have these STIs is to get tested. We recommend getting tested every 3-12 months, depending on your risk. You should also test whenever you have a new sexual partner, or if you want to stop using condoms with a regular partner. It can take some time after you first have an STI before it can be detected by a test.

For both chlamydia and gonorrhoea, we recommend waiting until 2 weeks after last exposure. You can still do a test now but if it is negative you may need another test later.

What to expect after your test

Getting your results

Test results are normally ready within 3 working days of your sample arriving at our in-house laboratory. You will receive a text and an email when your results are ready. Login using the details sent through email to access your results. If you don't receive your results within seven days of posting your sample, contact us.

What does a positive result mean?

If you test positive for chlamydia or gonorrhoea, you will need treatment as soon as possible. It's generally best to get this from a sexual health clinic, but your GP might be able to treat some STIs. We will signpost you to local services where you can get any treatment, help and advice that you need.

How do STI home test kits work?

Our tests are highly accurate when done at the right time.

Although no STI test is 100% accurate, we use the gold standard for testing. All tests are processed in-house, as we run the UK's leading STI laboratory, which also deals with thousands of STI tests every day for the NHS and local sexual health services. Our tests are the same standard as those used in NHS sexual health clinics.

You can help to make your test as accurate as possible by following the instructions carefully when taking your samples.

How to collect your samples at home

Our STI test kits are all easy to use and come with clear instructions.

You need to take your own samples to be tested - this is known as self-sampling.

  • Men need to give a urine sample unless they are only doing a blood test.
  • Women need to swab the vagina unless they are only doing a blood test.
  • Depending on the test you choose, you may need to take a blood sample.
  • If you've had anal (in your bottom) sex, or oral (in your mouth) sex with male partners, we would recommend that you also take a swab from your bottom and/or your throat as gonorrhoea and chlamydia can be present at only these sites and might be missed if you only do a urine or vaginal test.
How long does it take to get your results?

Results are usually available 48-72 hours after our laboratory receives your samples.

How do you know when your results are ready?

We will let you know when your results are ready, by SMS or email (depending on your preferences). Simply log in using the details sent through email to access your results.

How is my privacy protected?

Keeping your personal information is important to us. We use appropriate technical and organisational measures to ensure your details are held securely and privately. We will never share your details or your test results with anyone else.
